Citation verification · Courts of Australia
True·Cite

For solicitors and counsel who file — and the systems they file from

Check the identity behind a citation. Keep the source evidence.

Check any citation. Each one is checked live against official and dated sources: official lookups where available, official-site search across the supported jurisdictions, and the court listings and publisher records TrueCite holds. Every finding shows its evidence, its date and its limits. No language model decides the result. Your supplied materials cannot turn an unresolved authority into a verified one.

A finding should lead back to its source, its date and its limits.

LIVE SERVICE · SCOPE SHOWN WITH EVERY RESULT — Every finding names its evidence and the date it was observed. Anything that cannot be confirmed comes back unresolved, never guessed. Unresolved is not a finding that the judgment does not exist.

Three clear outcomes

Verified — A unique identity matches a record. The finding states whether the evidence is an official court listing or a publisher record, and the date it was observed.

Identity conflict — The citation and the case name do not belong together. Where the case is held, the correct citation is shown.

Unresolved — No source confirmed the citation, or it is outside coverage. Confirm the authority at its source.

01 · privacy by construction

Your document stays in this browser.

Documents are read in your browser and are not uploaded. Only the citations and case names you check are sent to our server to be checked, with an optional document fingerprint (a hash) and label, and a record of each check is kept. Judgment text is not held.

02 · deterministic, logged

One identity check, in the browser flow and partner API.

The browser extracts citation identifiers for you to review. The server checks each submitted citation live, case name first, against official and dated sources, and stores the resulting run. Partner API requests use the same core, with scoped credentials, rate limits and safe request replay. No judgment text is held.

03 · recomputable

An identity report with traceable evidence.

The report identifies the source observation, index and rules behind each finding. Its hash binds the stored payload. Quotations, propositions and good-law status remain unchecked.

Your data, and nothing more.

TrueCite only receives the citation details you choose to send it. It has no access to your email, files, calendar, chats or accounts. Our AI connector for Claude and ChatGPT cannot reach them either: it sees only what your assistant puts into a TrueCite tool call.

Documents are read in your browser. We receive the citations you submit, an optional case name, a fingerprint and a label, and store each check on our servers in Singapore. A citation our own indexes cannot answer may be sent, with any case name you gave, to a web search provider. TrueCite runs no AI model and trains nothing on your data.

What we receive, store, log and share

How it sits in a firm

  1. In the browser, for a single submission.
  2. In a partner API, for the same check with scoped credentials.
  3. At the source page (pilot): Clip, a browser extension, checks the citation on the judgment page you have open and records the page and the time.

Shield, and sword.

Use the same identity check for either side’s submission. A missing record is a reason to confirm the authority at its source, not a finding that the judgment does not exist.

An identity report records the findings and their limits so the practitioner can decide what further source checking is required.

review the findings first · retain a report of the check and its limits

Evidence you can inspect.

A citation checker should distinguish a supported identity, an identity conflict and a record it cannot resolve. TrueCite reports the source and coverage behind that distinction.

Why this exists

The authority of the law rests on judges deciding by authorities that exist. A fabricated case in a court file misleads the court and disturbs the proper hearing of a matter. That cannot be allowed.

The practitioner who never meant it is still the one who answers for it: in costs, in reputation, sometimes in the right to practise. This exists so that the first does not happen, and the second need not.

And so that the profession can use these tools without fear, and keep pace.

How it verifies, and what it will never claim.

A statement of method, in the form a court would expect from an expert: what was done, from which source, and where the judgment was left to a person.

  1. Parse.Locate citation identifiers in the browser and review the list.
  2. Anchor.Submit the citation, with the case name when you have it. The case name is matched first.
  3. Compare. The citation is cross-checked against official and dated sources. A mismatch is shown with the correct citation; anything unconfirmed is left unresolved.
  4. Record.Issue a record of compact citation inputs, outcomes and limits; its hash identifies the record but does not itself reproduce source evidence.

Proof, not promise.

A missing record never establishes fabrication. Incomplete input, conflicting evidence and unavailable coverage cannot produce a verified finding.

What it leaves to you, in writing.

Whether an authority supports the proposition. Whether it is still good law. Whether a reported citation with no neutral form is the case you meant. Each is marked on the certificate as left to the practitioner, never silently passed.

Left to the practitioner.

Proposition, good-law status, and a reported citation that no listing or table resolves remain left to the practitioner, in writing.

Priced so that no one has to think about it.

Single-report payment: A$4.90 AUD, after the free allowance. Total price includes GST; TrueCite is registered for GST and a tax invoice is emailed to your firm address when a payment is confirmed. The provider confirms the payment and the report issues automatically. Reopening or reissuing an already issued run does not consume another allowance or payment. Partner API pricing requires a separate agreement.

Membership is by firm, and takes a minute.

Your ABN identifies the firm; your firm email identifies you. We send a code, you sign in. There is no password to keep. Submission and judgment text stay in your browser; an issued certificate retains compact result rows, a document label and fingerprints, server-held source provenance, and the firm or payment reference.

Counsel register in their own name with their own ABN. The ten free certificates belong to the firm, not the person, so a trial is used once.
